A new podcast aimed at self-builders, aspiring homeowners and anyone fascinated by the reality of building their own home launches in October 2026.
The Self Build Sessions, hosted by Jay Hubbard, Managing Director, and Matt Higgs, Commercial Director of English Brothers Bespoke Timber Frame, takes a deliberately different approach to the world of self-build.
Rather than focusing solely on technical specifications, U-values and building regulations, the podcast is about the people, stories, challenges and characters behind building a home.
The Self Build Sessions has been created to be informal, entertaining and honest, with conversations that reflect what self-building is really like – from the excitement of seeing a house take shape to the unexpected problems, decisions and frustrations that come along the way.
“There’s plenty of technical information out there about building a house,” says Jay Hubbard. “What we wanted to create was something a bit different – a place where we can talk to interesting people, hear their stories and have a bit of fun along the way.”
Matt Higgs adds:
“Self-build can be a pretty serious business, but it doesn’t always have to be serious. We want The Self Build Sessions to feel like you’re sitting around a table with people who know the industry, having a proper conversation – the good, the bad and occasionally the ridiculous.”
More than just a construction podcast
Each episode will feature a mix of regular sections designed to keep conversations varied and entertaining.
These include True or False, putting guests to the test on self-build myths and misconceptions; The Story, exploring their journey into the world of construction and self-build; Build Your Dream, looking at what they would
create if budget was no object; and a Quick Fire Round for some less predictable questions.
Other features will explore “What People Don’t See” behind the scenes of the construction industry, as well as “Lay One Brick”, where guests are challenged to share one piece of advice they would give to someone embarking on their own self-build journey.
Guests will include people from across the self-build and construction world, as well as homeowners and other interesting characters with a story to tell.
A podcast built for self-builders
The launch comes at a time when more people are researching alternative ways of building their own homes and looking for accessible, trustworthy information before committing to what can be one of the biggest projects of their lives.
The Self Build Sessions aims to complement the wealth of technical information available online by bringing a more human and entertaining perspective to the subject.
Episodes will be filmed as well as recorded, allowing listeners to follow the podcast through Spotify and YouTube, with shorter clips and highlights shared across social media.
The podcast is produced in association with English Brothers Bespoke Timber Frame, the Wisbech-based timber frame company with a history stretching back to 1844.
However, the intention is for The Self Build Sessions to go beyond timber frame and construction, bringing together people from across the wider self-build community.
