As the new year starts off with a bang, what better time to breathe some new life into your living spaces? The beginning of a new year means new interior trends to look forward to and in 2024 the spotlight is on the kitchen. The latest Pinterest Predicts report highlights ‘kitschens’ as one of the biggest trends of the year. An offshoot of the maximalism trend, Pinterest states that “Gen X and Boomers will spruce up their cooking areas with thrifted finds, vintage appliances, and jarring pops of paint. No minimalist aesthetic is safe.”
Essentially, kitschens are about embracing quirky style and vibrant décor to add your own personal stamp to your space. Here, the homeware experts from Denby share their tips for getting this look in your own home.
Choose a style
There are various ways you can inject some ‘kitsch’ into your own kitchen space. Some like the retro 50s or 70s look while others prefer a more rustic farmhouse style of kitchen. Before adding your quirky décor, decide what kind of look you’re going for, as this will help guide your colour palette, patterns, and accents.
Pick a fun colour palette
Pastels are a mainstay of the ‘kitsch’ look and pink is set to be the colour of the year in our culinary spaces, as Pinterest searches for ‘retro pink kitchens’ are up 40%. Shades that are of particular interest include Farrow & Ball’s earthy Templeton Pink — which received a 250% increase in Google searches from January 2023 to January 2024 (Google Trends) — as well as Pantone’s pastel-toned Colour of the Year, Peach Fuzz.
If pink isn’t quite your style, you’ll be pleased to hear it’s not the only standout colour of 2024. Pinterest searches for ‘green kitchen paint’ are up 55% as interior décor fans add some natural luxe to their spaces.
While these colours are popular options, you don’t have to limit yourself to them to get the look. Choose any colours and shades you like and don’t be afraid to get playful. This trend is all about being creative and making your space unique to you. For instance, you may choose bold orange and yellow tones for a vintage 70s-inspired kitchen.
Incorporate some pattern
Quirky kitchens wouldn’t be complete without some pattern. Try to incorporate at least one or two prints to get this look. You can choose botanical designs such as ditsy florals for a ‘kitschy’ farmhouse style or incorporate bold geometric patterns for a retro-inspired kitchen. Alternatively, go whimsical with themed motif prints which will add even more personality to your space.
Using textiles is a great way to add a touch of pattern without being too overwhelming. Small items like tea towels, oven gloves, and placemats are perfect for adding colour and design, as is decorated tableware. You can use block colours to break up patterned pieces and keep the space looking balanced.
Make the most of kitchen décor
There are a few ways you can add more colour and patterns to your space, and you don’t need to invest in a brand-new kitchen to do so. A new lick of paint and some wallpaper are quick and easy ways to instantly transform your décor, and if you want to go for a really bold look, consider painting your kitchen cabinets or adding patterned vinyl wrap.
If you don’t want to make any major changes to your kitchen, you can incorporate colour and pattern through small touches and kitchen décor. Fun retro appliances and colourful tableware and cookware can make a big difference to the feel and look of your space. Place a few pieces on your countertops or some open shelving to add to the ‘kitsch’ look and show off your curated collection.
Add some vintage elements
As quirky kitchens are about uniqueness, don’t be afraid to get creative and find new ways to decorate with pieces you already have. For example, plates can be used as wall décor while jugs and teapots make great vases. What better way to show off your personality than with objects you already love?
This trend also provides the perfect opportunity to search for some vintage gems. Rummage around your attic or ask your family if they have any old ceramics they no longer need. You can also scour your local charity shops for vintage finds to mix and match with your new additions and add some retro flair to your kitchen.
“In 2024, the trend towards kitsch and quirky kitchen décor reflects a growing desire for individuality in interior design. We’re increasingly seeking to personalise our living spaces, and the kitchen — often considered the heart of the home — is no exception. Embracing eclectic elements, vibrant colours, and whimsical accessories allows us to infuse our kitchens with personality, creating spaces that tell unique stories.
“You don’t have to invest in a brand-new kitchen to get this look either. Enthusiasts are embracing the trend by getting creative on a budget. Thrift store finds, DIY projects, and upcycled items are becoming key players in achieving this distinctive look. This trend also offers an ideal chance to fall back in love with your existing pieces, and maybe add a few new ones to the mix to inject even more style and personality to your home.”- Richard Eaton, design director from Denby.
