The aftermath of the Covid pandemic combined with financial instability and rising living costs have created a new trend in home building.
“Multi-generational living is increasingly becoming an appealing solution for UK families,” says Lisa Grosse from Cedral. “Pooling together finances to buy a house big enough for two or more generations, or extending an existing property to house more family members is the perfect way to share the load of increasing costs.”
Take inspiration from three real life case studies and find out how Cedral is meeting the demand for this hot new trend. You can find out more about Cedral products and order free samples here.
1. Creating additional storage space
Bigger blended families have more possessions and creating a separate outdoor building is a great way to extend the storage footprint without compromising valuable living space. But nobody wants to look at an unsightly outbuilding.
Planning requirements for this development of family homes by the Oxford Canal stipulated moving storage sheds to the front of the building to allow uninterrupted canal views at the back. With a minimum life expectancy of 50 years, Cedral cladding was chosen for its durability and excellent fire performance classification. It provided the ideal style solution to create visually attractive storage spaces at the front of each home.
“The final result has totally met our expectations and is visually very striking,” says David Chidlow, Director of Aquinna Homes. “Using Cedral takes away the need to do heavy maintenance and regular painting in the future.”
2. Adding an annex for grandparents
The challenges of caring for elderly parents during the pandemic led the Burley family in Sheffield to create a self-contained separate residence on their property for the parents to move into. Impressed by the cladding’s natural looking finish, Cedral facades were chosen for quick and efficient installation and to add insulation. In fact, Mark Burley installed the cladding himself, saying the process was very straightforward.
“The overall look is stunning and everyone that visits comments on it, they can’t believe it isn’t real wood,” he says. “The material is really robust and looks amazing. We have already recommended Cedral to several people who have asked about the product, including two building companies who saw the annex and were impressed.”
3. Extending living space into the garden
A garden room provides a multi-faceted living space that can function as a home office, teenage den, playroom or cosy chill out zone. Creating a building that is visually attractive and long-lasting as it adapts to the family’s changing needs over time is essential.
Tristen Read, Director of Read Garden Rooms Ltd, explains why he uses Cedral cladding to create his outdoor studios.
“We’re selling a premium product at the high end of the market and Cedral cladding fits the bill perfectly for that,” says Tristen. “With Cedral you get a thicker board, richer colours, a better paint finish and overall, a better-quality product.”
Another key selling point is the low maintenance requirement of Cedral facades and the wide colour range.
“Cedral is a fantastic option for our customers who want their building to stay looking like new without the upkeep of painting wooden cladding every year – and they always impressed when they see the range of options that they can have.”
