Window coverings can really make or break a bedroom’s decor and overall feel, so choosing your design and patterns with care is essential. Patterns, prints, plain, wood or anything in between can change the entire look of your room, so it’s important to consider your primary objectives – do you want a cosy and calm bedroom or something more dramatic that makes a statement? While the primary role of bedroom curtains is to block light and keep your space warm, there is infinite scope to play with prints and patterns and really make the place where you lay your head something genuinely unique to your design ideas.
Which Style or Pattern is Best?
The simple answer is there is no one perfect print or pattern for your space as the selection is entirely personal to you and your desired look. For example, patterned curtains are best suited to plain walls to add colour or design pop while drawing the eye. A monochrome palette may be great for you if you want a simpler but still striking design, or perhaps a neutral colour scheme of beige, cream, ivory, white, grey or brown may blend better for you. Again, a pattern with complementary colours (those that sit opposite each other on the colour wheel) could enliven a space with plain walls, using the pattern as a focal point of the room. If choosing between blinds and curtains, both can look amazing, but for patterns, not all blinds can be made in the fabrics you may have your heart set on. Deciding on colour and scheme may need to come first before window cover style selection. Also, consider if you want lining on the back of the curtain and how that might alter the look of the pattern or fabric you select.
Plus, if your room already has a loud wall colour or bed coverings, it’s worth considering if the designs will clash. This is also an essential consideration if these are aspects that can’t be altered. If this is the case, the scale of patterns should vary, so if a duvet cover has a large print, choose a mid-sized pattern for the curtains and something smaller for anything else. Multiple patterns also need something to tie them together to accentuate their look – this may be a similar pattern or colour. Just remember, when opting for a colourful pattern, keep the room simple and let your curtains do the talking.
Perhaps adding drama with a bold pattern is the aim for the window coverings to invigorate a plain bedroom. On the other hand, possibly bringing nature in is preferable with a tropical or botanic print. Or perhaps it’s creating your own pattern with your favourite colours and shapes. Either way, you can create a modern space or something more traditional and timeless with patterns and prints.
