Grand Designs Live presents new 2018 Grand Theatre line-up

Grand Designs Live will return to Birmingham’s NEC from 10 – 14 October 2018, welcoming an amazing showcase of the latest innovations, trends and all-new products across each of the five sectors of the show, which span Build, Kitchens, Bathrooms, Gardens and Interiors. Set over 5 days, this unique event is a must-visit for anyone looking to gather information and learn about the world of interiors, design and self-build.

Visitors to the show can hear from a variety of industry experts at the Grand Theatre, sponsored by Airflow, where an engaging line-up of talks will take centre stage across all days of the show; with seminars ranging from architecture to interior design, to adding value to existing homes and much more.

In a range of daily sessions at the Grand Theatre, including ‘Meet The Grand Designers’; presented by different home owners from the new 2018 series of the popular TV series on which the exhibition is based; within 1 week of the show airing visitors will be able to see first-hand the Grand Designers discuss, with Kevin, the trials, tribulations and triumphs that undertaking ambitious self-build projects can present. Each day our Grand Designers will take part in ‘Top Tips For Planning Your Own Grand Design’, where they will be joined on stage by a panel of our industry experts for a dynamic discussion exploring various aspects of their self-build projects; covering everything from architecture, to project management, to planning permission and everything in between.

Visitors to the Grand Theatre can join a panel of eco-experts including Kevin McCloud, Charity Partners; Friends of The Earth, environmental foundation Join the Pipe and Designer Stella Conran to discuss ‘Plastic Surgery’; looking at how we can reverse the vicious cycle of use and pollution by designing our homes without damaging our planet and explore some design pioneers who combine their passion for innovation and inspirational design with care for our planet.

In addition, for the first time, Piers Taylor, from The World’s Most Extraordinary Homes, will appear at Grand Designs Live at the NEC, and will take to the stage sharing his advice on creating your own extraordinary home.

Visitors with a keen interest in interiors can join engineer Dick Strawbridge and Interior Designer Angel Adoree as they upcycle an unused household item into a stylish and unique piece of furniture. On the 10th October they will reveal the winner of this year’s ‘Interior Room Sets Competition’, the finalists will discuss their personal designs following this year’s theme, Design By You. Also on the 10th October,

Dick and Angel, will be joined onstage by Kevin McCloud, for ‘Stories From The Chateau’, taking visitors through their incredible transformation of a chateau in the heart of France dating back over 500 years, from derelict to an idyllic, beautiful home, hotel and wedding venue.

Those wanting to undertake projects, whether big or small, can hear from our panel of experts including the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), hosted by Kunle Barker, as they discuss Working With Architects and how they can add value to projects and property. While Upcycled Hour, presented by Chris Billingham, looks at the stylish butsustainable side of upcycling and gives visitors an insight into the supreme quality that is being achieved by professional creative reuse artists.

Back due to popular demand, Kevin will revisit his talk on ‘The History of the Toilet’, discussing how the advent of sanitation provided the backbone of modern architecture and home design today. Join Kevin as he delves into the fascinating history of the smallest room in the house and explores the innovations and technologies that shape our world.

Tackling the controversial subject dominating the Birmingham news, join our panel of experts, including representatives from CRASH, and James Furzer, of Clear Architects, as they discuss the ‘Rise Of The Rough Sleeper’.  With the number of homeless rising, this session explores and debates what can be achieved and what is being done to reduce this shocking statistic.

Visitors can join Kunle Barker and an expert panel as they explain ‘How To Avoid Your Own Grand Design Becoming A Money Pit’; discussing how to avoid the common pitfalls of a self-build, and advise on how to choose a builder, source materials, select a design, manage your budget and time.  Also providing advice on kitchen design and where to spend your money, Kunle Barker and Anna Casas from Utopia, discuss how to get more ‘Bang For Your Buck’.

Jason Bennett of Airflow asks, ‘Are you up to date with the latest ventilation building regulations?’ This daily RIBA certified seminar discusses the issues around ventilating your home. Understand the ventilation technologies available and the building regulations you need to comply with for both new build and renovation projects.

Visitors can experience all these informative seminars, and more, including the latest trends, innovations and unseen products, at the ultimate event to inspire, inform and spark the creativity of all design enthusiasts, Grand Designs Live. With more seminars and presenters due to be announced, this year’s timetable is shaping up to be its most exciting yet.
